| Belarus, Russia, Moldova to unite supercomputer networks |
| |
Moldova plans to unite its supercomputer resources with the supercomputer grids of Belarus and Russia, learned from Anatoly Krishtofik, Executive Director of the Union State program SKIF-GRID, a research officer with the United Information Science Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The joint project of the three countries is expected to be implemented as part of a new program designed to guide innovative cooperation of the CIS states till 2020.
With the networks connected, scientists will be able to team up for joint research projects, the official said. Anyone will be able to use supercomputing resources of partners when necessary. The integration will open up new opportunities for industrial enterprises of the three countries. They will be able to model new components of machines and vehicles, new pharmaceutical compounds, will be able to process geological survey information.
The demand for supercomputing services is rising in Belarus, with mechanical engineering flagships in the lead. For instance, Minsk Motor Works models hydrodynamic processes in engines, to calculate engine performance parameters and the content of exhausts.
Belarus’ supercomputer grid comprises the United Information Science Institute of the National Academy of Sciences, the Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny, the Belarusian State University, and the Grodno State University. The Belarusian grid is connected with the European grid. Russia is the key partner of Belarus in this area. “It is particularly important for us to promote supercomputing cooperation in conditions of the Customs Union and the Single Economic Space,” said Anatoly Krishtofik. “The expansion of partnership with other supercomputer manufacturers would need more efforts and would be less effective. One has to keep in mind that the world’s leading manufacturers of supercomputers divided the conventional markets long ago and are now aggressively penetrating new ones”.
