Belarus plans to build LNG terminals in Lithuania or Poland
Belarusian plans to build LNG terminals in Lithuania or Poland for regasification of imported liquefied gas, in accordance with the Strategy for the development of the Belarusian energy potential approved by resolution #1180 of the Council of Ministers dated August 9, 2010.
The construction of terminals is expected to diversify Belarusian gas imports. Belarusian organizations will be taking part in prospecting and production of natural gas abroad and supplies of liquefied gas to Belarus, including via Ukraine.
“Liquefied gas imports may amount to 10 billion cubic meters annually, which will reduce the dependence on deliveries from Russia,” the strategy reads.
In 2010, Belarus is projected to buy 22.161 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas.
In the medium term, supplies of Asian natural gas to Belarus are considered unfeasible because of long-term contracts of Russian gas giant Gazprom for purchases of the entire volume of Middle Asian natural gas exports and absence of independent infrastructure.
