The Minsk Watch Plant has every chance to find a new life and a new status, Managing Director of the Swiss company Franck Muller International B.V. Vartan Sirmakes reported.
“Luch was once a well-known firm, and, partly, it is our dream. It is a great call to try to breathe a new life into the brand that once resounded from Brest to Vladivostok. You have unique traditions, and it is very important to have manufacturing traditions, especially the manufacturing of mechanical watches, the watches that Franck Muller produces as well,” Vartan Sirmakes said.
In his words, people in Belarus can work and it is the main thing. The company does not aim to create something new, it intends to reconstruct the plant and that was once famous, to make Luch watches a popular brand again. In the Soviet times the plant produced up to 6 million watches a year. The Belarusian watch empire collapsed after the Soviet Union disintegrated. Today the company produces ten times less that it used to and its products are not in great demand. The country has spent many years trying to save the plant. The Swiss investor believes that Luch has every chance to revive and find a new status.
Vartan Sirmakes paid a visit to the Minsk Watch Plant together with the President of Belarus in October 2009. The major condition of the Belarusian side is to preserve and develop the production, bring the brand onto a higher level. According to the investor, “the goal of the Belarusian side coincides with our intentions, and we can do it”. The company is ready to make a modern plant, train the personnel and bring its clockwork technologies, share its experience. “We have good relations and understanding with the Belarusian partners,” Vartan Sirmakes said.
He also stated that the watches produced in Belarus will have the Luch trademark. The company will further decide on new brands. The company is already ready to offer a new design and ideas for Minsk watches, the head of Franck Muller said.
