Operations with plastic cards up 20.7%/yr in Belarus 4Q to Br11.714 tln

The volume of operations with individual plastic cards rose 20.7% on the year in October-December 2009 to 11.714 trillion Belarusian rubles (Br), the National Bank of Belarus reported.

Cash withdrawals expanded 16% to 10.18 trillion rubles; payments for commodities and services rose 64.9% to 1.534 trillion rubles; the share of cashless payments increased to 13.1% of all operations from 9.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The number of plastic bankcards in circulation increased 27.4% in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 7.749 million units on January 1, 2010.

The number of trade and service organizations accepting cards rose 36.3% on the year in the fourth quarter to 12,216, and the number of payment terminals went up 30.2% to 35,960 units.

There were 2,701 ATMs on January 1, 2010, up 10.2% from January 1, 2009, 3,610 cash dispensers, up 10.2%, and 2,952 self-service terminals, up 41.7%.

The NBB expects the number of bankcards to grow to 7.5 million by 2010, while cashless payments will account for 30% of the total number of transactions.
